Bintangs, a Dutch rhythm and blues band, were formed in 1961 in Beverwijk. Initially known as an indorock band, they began incorporating R&B influences into their sound. Their first single, "You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover"/"I'm a Man", was released in 1965 on Muziek Express. In 1969, they signed with Phonogram Records and released their debut album Blues on the Ceiling. Notable songs from this period include "Ridin' on the L & N" and "Travelling in the U.S.A.", both released 1970. Throughout the 1970s, Bintangs continued to release albums such as Genuine Bull (1975) and Night-Fighter (1979), with various lineup changes. Despite commercial success eluding them nationally and internationally, they maintained a loyal fanbase within the Netherlands. The band went on hiatus in 1983 but reunited in 1989.
