David Essig (born December 2, 1945, in Frederick, Maryland) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, producer, and record label owner. He emigrated to Canada in 1971 and was introduced to national audiences as a performer at the Mariposa Folk Festival that same year; he later became a Canadian citizen in 1978. In 1974, Essig established Woodshed Records, one of Canada's first musician-owned labels, which saw distribution through Harvey Glatt’s Posterity Records. He toured Italy more than twenty times, gaining significant international popularity. In 1984, the label was revived as “New Woodshed”. As a producer, Essig oversaw recordings for artists including Willie P. Bennett, Cathy Fink and Duck Donald, Dixie Flyers, Fred Eaglesmith, and Jackie Washington. His discography features the albums Redbird Country (1973), High Ground (1975), Stewart Crossing (1976), and Sequence (1978), alongside later releases Tremble and Weep (1996), A Stone in My Pocket (2004), and Double Vision (2008).
