Ona Mae is an anthropologist and world traveler whose musical journey began after becoming a mother, an experience that transformed her perspective on life. She discovered music as a deeply personal form of healing, realizing her voice had the power to heal others as well. Drawing inspiration from folkloric traditions, Ona Mae's music is intimate and sensitive, blending Mediterranean and Latin American influences. In 2022, she released her debut album "CanciĂłn Acuarela", a collection of healing songs.
One of his songs is part of "Latin Café"; compilation by Putumayo Record Label, published in October 2024.
Released digitally on October 17, 2025 (across most platforms), and on physical format on June 13, 2026, Ona Maeâs second album, Cerca del Sur, is a musical travel diary shaped by her dual perspective as a composer and by her background in anthropology, as well as by her experience of motherhood within an Afro-descendant family. Rooted in the sound of the kamĂ©lĂ© nâgoni, a West African harp she has played for over a decade, the album brings into resonance West African, Iberian and Latin American musical worlds. Blending songs with confessional fragments, field recordings, travel audio, soundscapes and multiple languages, Cerca del Sur unfolds like an ethnographic journal in sound â intimate, vibrant and deeply textured. Through it runs a reflection on cultural resonance, on the transmission of intersecting memories, and on orality as a living thread between places, generations and voices.
