Sunwheel were formed in the heady days of the 90’s, a golden age of indie rock. Touring the university circuit and the London scene Sunwheel were known for their soaring ‘Verve like’ choruses and great musicianship. Fast forward to August 2024 and the original 5 members from Derby, England are back.
Ocean Dust is their first release in over 26 years.
Bass player and songwriter Matt Shaw wrote the original song in 1993 telling the story of someone sitting at a train station after a relationship breakdown and trying to work out their next move. Later, guitarist Andy Richardson rewrote the lyrics. This time, telling the story of someone who falls in love at a young age - but by being so young, is distracted by other things such as going out and having fun.
Ocean Dust uses the analogies of the ocean and also marble ‘mantle’ as symbolism for the ‘promises’ made ‘’ I carved a statue hand in glove “ Then when the relationship turns sour “ Until I traded love for lust / that statue crumbles into dust “.
The single also features references to some of the great bands of the 1990’s. Such as The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Seahorses & Cast.
