Constitué de Malcolm Kelley et Tony Oller, le duo MKTO voit le jour en 2010 à Los Angeles (Californie). La rencontre des deux hommes intervient cette année-là sur le plateau d’une série (Gigantic) pour la chaîne Nickelodeon dans laquelle ils tiennent un rôle. Aussitôt, les deux meilleurs amis fictifs le deviennent dans la réalité et fondent MKTO, association de leurs initiales. Un premier simple intervient en 2012. Le duo, signé par Columbia Records, publie ainsi « Thank You », combinaison de pop et de rap. Si la chanson ne se classe pas au Billboard, elle prépare le terrain au simple suivant, « Classic » (2013), qui se classe n° 14. C’est la première et dernière fois qu’un de leurs titres se classe localement, même si « American Dream » et « Bad Girls » prendront place dans les charts américains spécialisés pop, respectivement en 2014 pour le premier (n° 33) et en 2015 pour le second (n° 36). Plusieurs fois nommés aux Teen Choice Awards et aux Radio Disney Music Awards, les deux amis se contentent d’un album homonyme paru en 2014 et classé n° 31, ainsi que de l’EP Bad Girls l’année suivante (non classé). En 2017, ils en viennent à faire une pause, qui prend fin l’année suivante lorsque MKTO publie de nouveaux simples. Face aux scores décevants de ces derniers, le deuxième album prévu est finalement annulé et Tony Oller annonce au cœur de l’été 2021 son départ du duo.
