Tomas Fujiwara is an American jazz and improvisational drummer. He began playing drums at age seven, inspired by a drum battle between Buddy Rich and Max Roach. After studying under Joyce Kauffman for two years and eight years with Alan Dawson, Fujiwara entered the American jazz scene in the 2000s, collaborating with musicians such as Taylor Ho Bynum, Ralph Alessi, Matt Bauder, Trevor Dunn, Mary Halvorson, Sunny Jain, Steve Lehman, Reuben Radding, Matana Roberts, and Brandon Seabrook. His debut album, Actionspeak, was released in 2010, followed by The Air Is Different in 2012. Fujiwara has also composed for theater, film, and dance, and has led ensembles including the 7 Poets Trio, Triple Double, and Thumbscrew. His work has been featured on albums by Michael Formanek, Mary Halvorson, Amir ElSaffar, Tomeka Reid, and others.
