Koen De Cauter, born November 22, 1950, in Roeselare, is a Belgian multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer specializing in Gypsy jazz, New Orleans jazz, and the chansons of Georges Brassens. De Cauter performed on guitar, soprano saxophone, and clarinet. Influenced by Manouche musicians at his father's restaurant, Klokkeput, De Cauter joined the ensemble de Piottos in 1965 with Fapy Lafertin. In 1975, De Cauter and Lafertin formed the Waso Quartet, recording the albums Live at Gringo's (1976), Round About Midnight (1987), and Ombre et lumière (2004). De Cauter also recorded as a leader of the group Romani. His discography includes Pays Tribute to the Music of Georges Brassens (1999), Pour un petit bonheur posthume (Hommage à Georges Brassens) (2011), and New Orleans Rendezvous (2015) with Evan Christopher. De Cauter performs with his children—Waso, Dajo, Myrddin, and Vigdis—in the De Cauter Quintet.
