Formed in 1988 in Ironbridge, Shropshire, by John Walker (vocals, guitar), Cancer is a British death and thrash metal band. Renowned for their brutal style, the band, then completed by Ian Buchanan (bass) and Carl Stokes (drums), recorded three albums for the Vinyl Solution label, To the Gory End produced by Scott Burns (1990), Death Shall Rise with guitarist James Murphy (1991) and The Sins of Mankind (1993), before signing with Warner Bros. bound EastWest for the groove metal exercise Black Faith (1995), which met with a lukewarm reception. Split up in 1996, Cancer was reborn in 2003 and returned to the studio for the album Spirit in Flames (2005), in which Walker was surrounded by Stokes and new musicians. After several years of inactivity, the band's return in 2013 leads to the album Shadow Gripped (2018), produced for Peaceville Records. In 2022, the band reformed again, with Daniel Maganto (bass), Gabriel Valcázar (drums) and Migueloud (guitar), replaced by Robert Navajas for the album Inverted World, released in 2025.
