Super Junky Monkey is a pioneering Japanese all-female mixture rock band formed in March 1991. Known for their explosive fusion of metal, funk, punk, and rap, the group broke genre boundaries with raw energy and technical prowess. The original lineup featured Mutsumi “MUTSUMI” Takahashi (vocals), Keiko (guitar), Shinobu Kawai (bass), and Matsuda!! (drums). They gained early international attention by performing at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York (1993) and being selected alongside Peter Gabriel for the Canadian Music Awards (1994). That same year, they released their live indie debut Cabbage, followed by their major label debut album SCREW UP on Sony Records. Their track "ENDLESS ZOOM" became the first Japanese artist-produced station ID for MTV Japan and won a gold medal at the New York Festivals. Super Junky Monkey toured North America extensively, featured on the cover of Billboard magazine in 1995, and released their third album Parasitic People in 1996. Tragedy struck in 1999 when vocalist MUTSUMI passed away. The band released tribute and archival material in the following years. On June 4, 2025, they released Live at LONDON Astoria 1998, capturing a powerful performance in the UK, with a commemorative event in Osaka scheduled for June 22.
