Elina Maria Katarina Barruk, known professionally as Katarina Barruk, was born on December 5, 1994, in Storuman, Sweden. She is a Sámi singer and pianist who sings predominantly in the Ume Sámi language. Growing up, she was influenced by her mother's piano playing and her father Henrik Barruk’s work in yoiking and Sámi language preservation. Barruk released her debut album Báruos in September 2015, featuring songs written in Ume Sámi. She has performed at notable events such as Norway's Varanger Festival and sang in Ume Sámi at UNESCO’s launch of the International Year of Indigenous Languages in January 2019. Barruk was honored with the Young Artist of the Year award at the 2012 Riddu Riđđu Sámi festival and won the Youth Prize at Umeå's Sámi Week in 2013. Her second album, Ruhttuo, was released in October 2022.
