Mette Henriette Martedatter Rølvåg – born on November 27, 1990, in Trondheim, Norway – is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and performer better known by her stage name Mette Henriette. Alongside being a musician, she is also involved with developing scenography, lighting design and choreographic concepts for her performances. Signed to the ECM label, she was the first artist to release a double debut album, Mette Henriette (2016), on the label. She grew up in Trondheim, which had a vibrant music scene, and, at an early age, she began collaborating and touring with several musicians from jazz conservatories in Norway and New York. Eventually, she left Trondheim to work on international projects, spending time in New York, London, Paris, Svalbard, and Oslo. When she signed to ECM, she gathered over a decade’s worth of her compositions and recorded them with her jazz and classical ensembles, creating a unique blend of both musical genres. Instead of splitting the recordings into two releases, she released 2015’s Mette Henriette as a double album, which was a rare move for any artist. The album achieved international acclaim and heralded the arrival of a visionary artist.
