ROXANA AMED, vocalist, composer, producer, and educator
Latin GRAMMY® nominee, member of NARAS® and LARAS®, and Gardel Award winner, Roxana Amed is a renowned Argentine jazz artist born in Buenos Aires and based in the United States. A composer, author, producer, and educator, her work blends South American folk traditions with art rock and modern jazz. Her unique artistic approach has been praised by GRAMMY.com, highlighting her “artistic vision, understanding of her place in the cultural space, and her ability to move between worlds.”
Considered by critics, audiences, and peers as one of the most important voices in contemporary South American music, Amed has gained recognition both in Latin America and internationally.
Her early works include the albums Limbo (2004) and Entremundos (2006), created in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Pedro Aznar (former member of the Pat Metheny Group). These were followed by notable productions such as Cinemateca Finlandesa (2010), a duo with pianist Adrián Iaies (Latin GRAMMY® nominee), Inocencia (2011), and La sombra de su sombra (2012), with pianist and composer Frank Carlberg, featuring original music based on poems by Alejandra Pizarnik. In 2019, she released Instantáneas, a live-in-studio recording.
In April 2021, she released Ontology with her ensemble led by pianist Martin Bejerano, performing compositions by Wayne Shorter, Alberto Ginastera, Miles Davis, and original works. The album made a significant impact on the international jazz scene.
In August 2021, she was awarded the prestigious “New Jazz Works” grant by Chamber Music America, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. That same year, Ontology was nominated for two Latin GRAMMY® Awards: Best Jazz/Jazz Latin Album and Best Arrangement. In 2022, the album won the Gardel Award for Best Jazz Album—the first time in 19 years that a vocalist and producer received this honor.
In April 2023, Amed was the only U.S.-based artist invited to perform at the Jazzahead! international jazz fair in Bremen, Germany, where her performance was met with great enthusiasm. That same year, she received new Gardel Award and Latin GRAMMY® nominations for her album Unánime, in the Best Jazz Album category. Her work was once again praised by specialized press in the U.S., Europe, and Argentina.
Unánime brought together renowned artists from across Ibero-America, including Chucho Valdés (Cuba), Niño Josele (Spain), Pedro Aznar (Argentina), Chico Pinheiro (Brazil), Julio Reyes Copello (Colombia), Tony Succar (Peru), and Linda Briceño (Venezuela). The album celebrates works by historic and contemporary composers such as Ignacio Cervantes, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Egberto Gismonti, Miguel Pous, César Prato, Julio Reyes Copello, as well as pieces by Miles Davis, Edward Perez, Martin Bejerano, and Amed herself.
On June 9, 2023, Amed released Los trabajos y las noches, again in collaboration with Frank Carlberg, featuring compositions based on poems by Alejandra Pizarnik. The album received 4 stars from DownBeat magazine, was nominated for a Gardel Award for Best Jazz Album, and was successfully premiered in New York in August.
On May 2, 2024, she released Becoming Human, also supported by Chamber Music America. Its debut was celebrated with performances at The Jazz Gallery in New York and in Miami.
"Becoming Human, in its understated—almost pleading—manner, is the most powerful statement yet for Amed to finally be included among the top tier of jazz vocalists.”
— John Chacona, All About Jazz
On May 23, 2025, Amed released her twelfth album, Todos los fuegos, where she reimagines Argentine rock classics through the lens of jazz. The repertoire includes compositions by Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Fito Páez, and Gustavo Cerati, featuring musicians such as Leo Genovese, Mark Small, Tim Lefebvre, Kenny Wollesen, and Martin Bejerano.
All her albums have been released by Sony Music Latin.
Currently, Roxana Amed is a full-time professor of voice and theory and co-directs a Latin American music ensemble at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami.
