Experimenting in film score. A few new albums on the slate for 2025
Aaron Drake is a multi-instrumentalist composer based in Los Angeles. A classically trained pianist, Aaron earned his MFA in Music Composition from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), working with influential composers James Tenney (microtonal music), Morton Subotnick (computer and electronic music), Michael Pisaro (experimental music), and David Rosenboom (logarithmic systems). These studies helped shape an approach to film music that is driven by process and concept.
Underlying meaning and concepts drive Aaron's compositions. The themes of his scores are multilayered and often draw on abstract meta-narratives derived from musical concepts, instrumentation, and theory. Aaron believes that a good score should reveal itself over time, offering something new and unexpected with each listen. His work demonstrates a fascination with techniques such as aural mnemonics, EVP, sonic masking, and historical and social trends that influence how we experience music.
Aaron has worked on numerous film, television, and video game projects. He is a skilled orchestrator who understands how to effectively use various instruments and sound design elements to achieve the desired impact.
Aaron lives in Highland Park with his wife and three children.
