Since he has been touring all over Europe and even beyond, Matt Ellliott has almost always drawn on the titles of his most emblematic album, Drinking Songs. With his deep voice supported by his acoustic guitar and now his saxophone, he set up a trio with pianist Barbara Dang and double bassist Anne-Elisabeth De Cologne (often at his side in the coming months) in order to revisit this key album recorded with no audience but live (musiciens really playing together). A journey through the most inaccessible corners of the soul, a window open on moments of pain, nostalgia and reflection. If some tracks only need 4 or 5 minutes to hook us away (What’s Wrong, What The Fuck Am I Doing On This Battlefield?, A Waste Of Blood), the trio stretches the poignant shipwreck of the Kursk a deliciously and together painfully way, or chains together as sometimes in concert two tracks to take them beyond 15 minutes (C.F Bundy / Trying To Explain, The Guilty Party / Also Ran). Off-format perhaps, this record is above all the opportunity to discover, or rediscover , an artist and an album beyond the norm as if it was still the first time.
