Derek Johnson is more than a songwriter and worship leader, he has deep desire to see people come to know the freedom of a life fully surrendered to Jesus. Born and raised in Indiana, Derek grew up in a family with music at the center. A life long musician, he cut his teeth on drums at an early age. By age 11, he began teaching himself guitar which opened the door to songwriting. After years of writing songs and fronting several bands, Derek found himself at a pivotal crossroad. At 17 years old, he walked into a Vineyard Church, experienced genuine worship, and encountered the presence of God. He would never be the same again. In 2007 he enrolled in ministry school at Bethel Church. In 2009 he began leading worship at Jesus Culture conferences in Redding, Ca. With a passion to lead others into the same life changing presence of God, in 2012 Derek partnered with Jesus Culture Music to record his first project “Emerging Voices”. Later that year, he would feature on “Jesus Culture: Live In New York” with his song “I Belong To You”. In 2015 Derek released his first solo project “Real Love”. The full length album captured Derek’s creative ability to usher Rock/Americana roots into the worship sound. Songs of testimony, prayer, and intimate worship made this stand out as a project with authenticity and heart. Derek has since been a staple of Jesus Culture Music releasing a collection of songs such as, “King Of Love”, “Power In The Cross”, “Beautiful Day”, as well as brand new releases in 2023, “Faith For It”, and “King Jesus”. Derek currently resides in Sacramento, California with his wife Becky and three children. He is the Worship Pastor at Jesus Culture Sacramento, the first official church plant of Jesus Culture. His mission to write songs that lead people to Jesus continues at the heart of this local church.
