George Clinton

Né le 22 juillet 1941 à Kannapolis (Caroline du nord), George Clinton s'installe à Plainfield dans le New Jersey, où il forme The Parliaments, une formation de doo-wop amenée à se tranformer en un imposant collectif soul dans les années 1960, sous l'appellation Parliament.

Collectif soul psychédéliqueSi « I Just Wanna Testify » est le premier hit tardif du groupe en 1967, les albums suivants mélangent joyeusement l'esprit du psychédélisme à un funk débridé, notamment grâce à l'apport du bassiste Bootsy Collins, frère d'arme de Clinton, et de Maceo Parker et Fred Wesley, tous trois ex accompagnateurs de James Brown. Les albums Chocolate City ou Mothership Connection (1975) sont les témoins de cette épopée, et les spectacles du groupe tiennent de la super production cinématographique quand une soucoupe volante arrive sur la scène.

Funk libérateurParallèlement, George Clinton fonde Funkadelic auquel participent les mêmes musiciens, et développe le concept du P-Funk au travers d'albums tels Maggot Brain en 1971 ou Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow (1977). Le chanteur aux tenues extravagantes et aux dreadlocks multicolores assure le spectacle en grand showman qu'il est (P-Funk Earth Tour, 1977).

Des rapports difficiles avec les maisons de disques, des tournées épuisantes et son addiction à la cocaïne ont raison de Clinton qui sabordent ses deux groupes en 1981. En revenant en solo avec l'excellent et futuriste Computer Games (1982), il fait mentir ses détracteurs qui le croient fini : le titre « Atomic Dog » est son premier n°1.

Nouvelle générationIl mène alors son activité à un rythme effréné, entouré de ses fidèles musiciens et de jeunes loups, selon des réussites diverses. Au remarquable Urban Dancefloor Guerillas (1983) succèdent le salace R&B Skeletons in the Closet (1986), l'anodin The Cinderella Theory (1989, avec Chuck D et Flavor Flav de Public Enemy) et les excellents Hey Man, Smell My Finger (1993) puis Dope Dogs (1995).

Entre temps, il produit l'album Freaky Styley (1985) de Red Hot Chili Peppers. George Clinton apparaît aussi au cinéma, notamment dans Graffiti Bridge (1990), et à l'instar de James Brown, il est l'un des artistes les plus samplés par les rappeurs. Pour les aider dans ce vaste choix, il va jusqu'à publier un album de ses propres samples.

Cela ne lui évite guère les faux-pas, comme l'album T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership) de 1996, teinté de nostalgie. A l'inverse, Greatest Funkin' Hits donne rendez-vous à la nouvelle génération (Q-Tip, Digital Underground, et le fan Ice Cube).

Gourou funkPlusieurs disques en concert suivent, avant son arrestation pour possession de cocaïne fin 2003. Relâché peu après, il peut publier le double album inédit How Late Do U Have 2 BB 4 U R Absent? en 2005.

En septembre 2008, le gourou funk est de retour avec George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love, disque de reprises invitant ses amis Sly Stone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, RZA, El DeBarge et Carlos Santana.

Le parcours de George Clinton, sans cesse original et novateur, impose le respect, pour avoir traversé en un demi-siècle tout un pan de l'histoire de la musique noire, du rhythm and blues à la soul et du psychédélisme au funk futuriste.
